Post No start Problem
Hi all . I have a 2005 smart coupe for 2 (Canada). I'm having issues with a no start problem . The dealer had it for 5 month on every problem under the sun. Got it back at the end of Feb and ran great for 2 weeks. KNow it will not start at all. Turn the key and nothing , I can here a click under the dash but thats it. I had the starter changed in September. I checked the battery and it charged right up. The dealer thinks it could be the gear shifter . Does anybody have any experience on this. If it the gear shifter , is there a way to bypass it to get it running. This car is killing me.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thnaks Jules

Is your Smart a Cdi?
It must be showing N in the display to start.
Does it bump start?

It is a CDI . It shows N on the dash . If I shift the lever you can here everything moving but no matter what I do I can not get it to do anything

Hi,

I understand from your last post that the engine turns over but does not start.

Doubt if you can bypass the gear stick - fixing it if something is wrong is easier. (For security reasons we can't publish how to do a bypass even if we knew how.)

The problems I have had with my Cdi have mostly been electrical and I did once have a fuel problem.
I suppose you are more prone to these problems in Canada due to the cold winters, cables crack and fuel waxes out and turns solid.

1) Check if you get fuel to the engine. Unclip the feed hose on rhs and turn on ignition a fraction of a second - fuel should spill all over!
2) Check if alternator is seized. I had this problem after my Smart was off the road for about 4 months. The engine turned but just did not start. The rotor was seized to the stator. Get a mate to crank engine on starter while you check underneith.

Cheers,
TK

Sorry . No turn over no start no nothing . Battery is fully charged up . connections are good. everythingelse in the car works but will not turn over, or even try to turn over for that matter.

dodgy brake light switch?

That would stop it from doing anything.

Brake light switch is OK if Jules can select N and R and brake lights work.

Jules, can you bump start your Smart?

See link for bump start. Don't get confused about pos 1. Just turn ignition on. http://www.Evilution.co.uk/index.php?id=169 It works on my Cdi.

Thanks. I will try as soon as I can find someone to push me. Would it be better to push or have someone pull me.
