Stuck in traffic on the M27 every morning, I watch my coolant temperature drop from 86 to 76 on a downhill stretch, running at 55mph with almost no throttle and the heater on.

i've had that the thing i don't understand is the 3rd blob lights up at 80c but if the coolant temp drops below 80c after that say 76c i still have three blobs showing :?

This is normal behaviour, called hysteresis. Reasoning behind this is to prevent a flashing blob when the temperatur might temporarily toggle between 80c and 79c (for the 3rd blob) while the temperature is moving across the 80c threshold. So they put in a hysteresis of 6 degress (80 degrees turns blob on, 74 degrees turns blob off). Just makes for a more stable blob display.

Regards,
Roland

I learnt about this only a week ago while making a frequency switch with adjustable hysteresis 8)

I don't have the X-Gauge so I cant' tell exactly what was the temp on my fortwo Cabrio but I got 4 blobs on the water temp sometimes when I am driving in a CBD area with heaps of traffic lights (after a 20 mins highway). I checked my water and coolant level before my trip. Anyone can advise what had happened to my Cabrio?

Seems common, mines the same and on one meet that we had where about 10 smarts were involved in a slow procession most of them same.
This is usually about the scenario when the kangaroo clutches start!

There is nothing wrong, smarts will do that, it's normal.
5 blobs is when you start worrying.

The temperature on my unmodified 2001 Pulse shows at two blobs after about 4 miles and then stays there. Is this too cool? Should I do anything about it?

temp blobs come on at 40c/60c/80c but if you have the blower on full with the heat right up in this cold snap you might not get upto 80c.
