hello, i just purchased a smart fortwo 2004 petrol and theres a loud whining, grinding type of noise coming from the engine area

the noise only appears when the engine is under load upwards of 3k rpms, i'm not sure if its transmission or turbo related

i am trying to fiquer out what the problem is , i have made a video of the noise while driving and placed it on youtube, does anyone have any ideas what it might be thanks in advance

It's really difficult to pick out any particular noise from your video......

Does it make the same noise if you are stationary in neutral and rev the engine?

Some of the noise on your video sounds like an air leak, so I would check the pipes to and from the intercooler for loose joints / splits etc.

It could also be a leak from the manifold, so have a look to see if all the manifold nuts are there and tight.

can you try to isolate the sound to a particular part of the engine? i.e. the righthand side or the top?

Any of these things could help in finding the cause.
