Post OIL Consumption
Hello people, I write from Italy, I own a 2003 SMART City Coupé 600 pulse
it has about 55000 miles and the previous owner was a woman (!!!).
I think it is still early to change the engine or to work on it although the oil consumption is quite relevant.
Just to have an idea, does somebody know how much oil should a smart use in order to assess the engine conditions?

In addition to this, I have another question: is it possible to disconnect the battery for 2 months without electrical/electronic/remapping problems?

My job brings me away from home for months...

Thank you

Post Re: OIL Consumption
You might be able to reduce the oil consumption by using an Engine Flush when you change the oil. It is likely that the pistons' oil control rings are sticking, causing the increased oil consumption. This will also burn out the exhaust valves if it is left for any length of time. I don't know how successful an oil flush might be, but it is certainly easier than a rebuild and only costs a few euros. Make sure you do the oil/filter change as soon as possible.

Also make sure you change all six spark plugs, often three are left by lazy people because you have to remove the rear panel. However the ceramic tip can disintegrate on old spark plugs, which makes a big mess in the combustion chamber, not good at all.

I don't think there's any problem leaving the car battery disconnected, but do not leave the key fob battery out for more than a minute or so otherwise you will need to arrange for the key to be reprogrammed.

Thanks a lot..about the spark plugs I agree: people don't like to work on the rear panel, so I will change the six spark plugs anyway.
The Engine flush, I hope it will work since considering your analysis my smart uses quite much oil but not much gas (21.5 Km x liter) and the performances (with air conditioning on) are still good so, it is probably not time to work directly on the engine yet.

Thank you again

Post Re: OIL Consumption
I suggest you use engine flush for diesel engines as this is more potent than the petrol variant of engine flush for freeing sticky piston rings. Leave the flush agent in sump for up to a week but don't drive your engine hard. Do a compression test before and after application. You can identify burnt valves by adding a spoonful of engine oil to each cylinder when testing compression. Increased compression after adding spoonful of oil indicates problem is with piston rings. No increase means burnt valves (assumes compression is below spec).
